Understanding car insurance in Mississauga, Ontario

Mississauga is one of Ontario’s largest and fastest-growing cities. It hosts a ton of large employers with corporate offices (like Samsung, TD Bank, and Wal-Mart), and it offers convenient commuting routes to several other communities, including:

  • Burlington
  • Oakville
  • Milton
  • Etobicoke
  • Brampton
  • Downtown Toronto

That’s made the city’s expansion a little haphazard—and traffic too, by extension. Safe driving is the the number-one way to reduce your car insurance premium in city.

The car is king in Mississauga. The city’s public transportation hubs tend to sit far apart from one another, often making it crucial to get your own set of wheels. This makes traffic pretty congested at rush hour.

Some of Mississauga’s intersections are massive. That makes it especially important to keep an eye on a few elements of the road to stay safe:

  • Pedestirans often need more time to cross these intersections because they’re so big.
  • Many drivers make their left-hand turns as the light turns yellow.

A higher number of claims in the area also means that your rate could be high just because of what your fellow citizens do on the road. Driving a simpler, less expensive car is the next-most effective way to reduce your premium in Mississauga.

Busting myths about driving and insurance in Mississauga

Myth: You can drive anywhere from Mississauga.

While Mississauga is ideally located for commuting purposes, the roads get very congested around rush hour which lasts from 8:00 am – 10:00 am in the morning and 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm in the evening. Driving further than one adjacent city means you’ll need to get up that much earlier.

Myth: Mississauga’s car insurance is cheaper than Toronto.

You’d think that collisions and car insurance claims would be lower in a city with as much space as Mississauga, especially compared to the more compact Toronto core. But Mississauga’s average annual car insurance rate stands at $3,474, while Toronto’s average annual rate is $2,983. Toronto’s subway reduces cars on the road every day, therefore reducing risk.

Myth: All auto insurance brokers are the same in Mississauga.

Don’t worry, we get it. But not all brokers are the same, and here’s why. Brokers find the best rates for the coverage that you want among all of the available car insurance companies they work with. Not every broker works with every single insurance company. We partner with new ones all the time, which is why it makes sense to keep getting new quotes—you never know when you’ll get your hands on a better rate.

Myth: Mississauga has no light rail transit.

While Mississauga doesn’t have a light rail transit system at present, it definitely has plans to implement one soon. Scheduled to be completed in 2024, the city’s LRT system will run along straight along Hurontario through the city centre. It will feature 19 stops across 18 kilometres of track.

Myth: Car insurance will get cheaper with the Fair Auto Insurance Plan.

We hope so, but it’s not guarnateed. One of the biggest reasons for high car insurance rates in Ontario come from insurance fraud, which costs billions every year. It’s being investigated, but that’s going to take time and ongoing maintenance. Lawyers fees and standardized care compensation should improve, even if the rates themselves could take longer to follow suit.

Car insurance in Brampton vs. Mississauga: who’s more expensive?

While both cities are on the high end of the insurance spectrum, Mississauga comes out ahead as the city with lower car insurance rates. Based on several hundred policies, Bramopton’s annual car insurance policy costs $4,072, while Mississauga’s average costs $3,474. It’s worth noting that a lot of factors can hide within those numbers, like how many car or drivers exist on a single policy.

How Mississauga rates compare to other cities in Ontario

  • North York: $4,261
  • Etobicoke: $4,199
  • Brampton: $4,071
  • Scarborough: $3,825
  • Woodbridge: $3,603
  • Richmond Hill: $3,579
  • Mississauga: $3,474

Quick tips on driving and insurance rates in Mississauga

Avoid Mississauga’s giant intersections if possible.

Wide roads mean wide intersections, and Mississauga has both in spades. Avoid making left-hand turns or last-minute rushes through a yellow light at these intersections:

  • Rathburn and Mavis
  • Burnhamthorpe and Hurontario
  • Burnhamthorpe and Grand Park Drive
  • Lakeshore and Stavebank
  • Dundas and Hurontario

Give extra space to cyclists.

Cyclists in Mississauga don’t have much in the way of dedicated lanes running north-south throughout the city. Watch out for them at Hurontario in particular, which doesn’t provide safety for them.

You won’t find dedicated trail networks, cycling highways, or overpasses for drivers with only two wheels. Driving safely among cyclists and yielding to them is an important part of driving safely in the city and keeping your car insurance rates as low as possible.

Lower your rates by living in the safest neighbourhoods.

Even car insurance rates are determined in part by where you live (it’s not just for home insurance!). That makes it important to pick a safe neighbourhood if you’re moving to Mississauga. Check out Rathwood, Churchill Meadows, Port Credit, and Lisgar if you’re in the market for a home. If that’s not an option, then

Drive older cars and drop collision coverage.

The technology and expensive electronics that go into newer cars is part of why insurance rates can get so high. Even a fender bender can cost hundreds of dolllars in replaced cameras and recalibrated sensors. Collision coverage for those new and expensive cars costs more due to those replacement costs. Cut down your rates by driving something simpler with simpler coverage.
